Mike’s Picks: The English Riviera

What I would listen to if I were somehow sunbathing at 2 or 3 AM. It would be dark out, but somehow still pleasantly warm — as if it were a nice, sunny day.

This album gives me a uniquely eerie feeling that I’ve never really been able to find anywhere else. Many of the songs have a distinct pulse; this phenomena makes me think of a consciously deliberate heartbeat. For me this pulse generates some dark undertones that carry throughout the album. When I first heard the album four or so years ago, when I was a sophomore in highschool, it made me intensely aware of my own mortality even though the lyrical content of the songs really have nothing to do with that subject matter. All of that being said, the melodic aspects of the album that come from it’s variety of instrumental and vocal tracks are intriguingly both haunting and comforting. They are both mysterious and soothing concurrently.

Listening to this song I’m on a sort of interdimensional surfboard flying all over the planet at light speed. It doesn’t feel like light speed though, it’s more like going through some sort of colorful, psychedelic wormhole at a generally normal pace.  I’ve never really know what this song is about, but the singer mentions all of these different places around the world that I’ve never been to that sound like cool places to go to so I always just imagine that. It’s a good groove.

#2: The Look

Imagine yourself in your favorite off-price department store, Ross or T.J.Maxx for example, with your favorite cat, who also happens to be your second or third best friend. You two are there to find the best finds and get some fashionable discounted clothes for the upcoming fall/winter season. You’re flying through the aisles, having the time of your lives when, out of nowhere, comes another person with their cat. You see each other across the aisles and, suddenly, it’s game time. The scene turns into swift flurry to grab the best gear before the other person-cat duo can. After a while, though, you realize that you all wear different sizes, and decide to get along. I’m not sure why, but this is the only thing I could think of to write about this song, do with it what you will.

#1: Trouble

I have one very distinct memory of being an insanely angst-ridden high school teen laying in my bed and letting this song lull me into sweet oblivion as I forgot about all of my terribly misguided existential dread. This song is so, so soothing — enjoy.
