Coming to the Electric Factory on February 15th is a unique techno-bass group from Belgium: Ganja White Night. Comprised of Benjamin “Bamby” Bayeul and Charlie “Erwan” Dodson, the duo is on a United States tour promoting their latest 2018 release, The Origins, an album as eclectic as their name.
They self-describe their sound as Wobble music – a dubstep, synth-heavy, unique sound they cultivated in the quiet town of Mons Belgium. The band, over time, developed a largely experimental sound in which discordant zaps and bass-heavy beats mosh together to form an encapsulating musical experience unlike anything you’ll hear on mainstream radio. This adds to their underground appeal, in which they carry a significant fanbase subscribing to a culture of experimental dance music with just enough individuality in the rhythms that everyone in the audience feels spoken to.
Ganja White Night has been making music for over ten years, and has gone through phases exploring reggae, EDM, dubstep, and jazzy synthetic tunes with a funk influence. Over the past few years, they have settled into a synthesis of all these genres, and thus spawned their creation of Mr. Wobble: a spacey, psychedelic introduction into the universe that is Ganja White Night. Mr. Wobble has recently been followed up by The Origins, an exploration into psytrance dubstep with clear influence by Aztec and tribal beats and language that complements their intense electronic beats.
The Origins features Dirt Monkey, Boogie T, Simona Brezanova, and, most famously, Zeds Dead in the closing song, “Samurai.” If you’re a fan of bands like Gorillaz, Aphex Twin, or Hallucinogen, you might just want to add this album to your Spotify playlist.
