Katie Bennett, who has been releasing music under the name Free Cake For Every Creature since 2012, released a lead single off her upcoming album “the bluest star” this past Thursday, and announced a tour for August, which will be coming through Everybody Hits 8/3. The single, “around you,” is inspired by Sarah Gerard’s essay “BFF” and the relationship between her and her childhood best friend.
In “around you,” Bennett depicts the friendship through descriptive scenes that paint images of suburban streets, schools, and homes. Though Bennett sings in a hushed tone, her words feel amplified in the way that whispers can seem loud in the middle of the night. It’s immediately comfortable, and her vignettes wrap around the listener like a warm blanket. Bennett complements this feeling with guitars building on top of each other, sheened riffs over fuzzy chords, topped off by ascending intervals at the end. Its subtle complexity is reflected in the chorus as well, lines like “you left some things unsaid, and I liked you more for that” hinting at strains in the friendship. It bears relistening in order to tease out the finer points within the larger picture.
“the bluest star” is out on Double Double Whammy on August 3rd, 2018, the same date as their Record Release Show at Everybody Hits. Full tour below:
